River Cruising - A more intimate way to travel

The great rivers of the world have always been conduits for commerce, creating lively market towns, religious centres, and river-based industries. Colonial administrators saw them as avenues to the interior with the potential for glory and riches. Enterprising individuals shipped goods and people, leading to the construction of luxurious passenger vessels in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Recently this wonderful mode of travel has been revived with elegant air-conditioned cabins, modern bathrooms and cosy dining rooms offering international cuisine. Traditional colonial furniture, impeccable service, and the teak and brass fittings of a bygone age complete the ambiance.

At Active Travel, our fascination with exotic river travel began more than two decades ago when we descended the Sepik River by dugout canoe. Now we are proud to offer the most comprehensive programme of unique river cruises including evocative rivers such as the Mekong River, Burma’s Irrawaddy and Chindwin rivers, the celebrated River Nile and the mystical rivers of India: the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Hooghly.

We strive to capture the essence of riverboat cruising, where the focus is on the places we visit and the people we meet along the way. Travelling with a small group of adventurers you enjoy a world away from TV and mobile phones, allowing you to experience the leisurely pace of yesteryear along with all the comforts expected in our modern world.

Importantly, our extensive knowledge and experience with river cruising and the various cruise vessels available, ensures we are regarded as the leading professionals of great river journeys in Australia, providing accurate, and appropriate advice; an important element to getting your next holiday just right.

Riverboats are not at all like blue water cruises. Vessels are small (some with a maximum of just 12 passengers). You are immersed in the countryside and there is much contact with the local people. There’s no casino on board and you can escape from the TV, internet and other modern distractions. This leaves you free to discover a fast disappearing world of relaxation – one where books, conversation and the environment reign supreme.

You are not confined to your boat and you can discover what lies beyond the riverbank on shore excursions with local guides to villages, markets, historic sites and national parks. It is a time to unwind, escape, relax and rediscover your world.

Cabins have two beds, modern bathrooms and a sitting area. There are sun decks, saloon lounges, a dining room and bar and delicious meals offer a variety of local and international cuisine.
